The C9 replaced the previous Sauber C8. Its debut in the 1987 season, the cars were raced by Kouros Racing, the name of the perfume brand of its sponsor, Yves Saint Laurent, although officially backed by Mercedes Benz. The team achieved only a twelfth place in the team standings, scoring points on only one date. For 1988, Kouros came out as a sponsor, forcing the team to rename itself Sauber Mercedes. As a result, Mercedes used AEG-Olympia as a sponsor - AEG was owned by Daimler Benz at the time. They managed to finish second in the championship behind Silk Cut Jaguar, with five wins in the season.
